Share Facebook Twitter Google + LinkedIn Pinterest We have a diversified farm where we grow corn and soybeans and grow seed for a major seed company. We have worked in seed sales for over 30 years with local farmers and we also have a crop insurance agency where we serve farmers in several counties here in northwest Ohio.We have diverse soil types ranging from black sandy loam to heavy clay. The management we use for all of the different soil types varies and timeliness is very important for us to be successful on those different types of farms. We predominantly no-till our soybeans or stale seedbed in the spring. Our corn is generally conventionally tilled. On our sandier soils, residue management is an issue. The soils need help warming up in the spring so tillage allows us to pick up a few extra days at planting time. We may vertically till a few acres this spring for soybean production. We try to minimize our trips over the ground and integrate different technologies to achieve that.We apply gypsum because we have a need to increase the calcium base saturation of our soils and satisfy the sulfur needs. We also believe there are water quality benefits related to that as well.I have some concern about what the spring will be like when the crops break dormancy. Growing degree units may influence our insect pressures this year. I hope we have favorable conditions so pests do not become an issue.I think there are a lot of opportunities in 2017 over 2016. We have higher levels of crop insurance revenue coverage for spring and our input costs are down in terms of fertilizer prices. Those are a couple of positives working in our favor and I am very optimistic about the coming year.
Share Facebook Twitter Google + LinkedIn Pinterest Moisture held on better than expected yesterday out of a frontal boundary that looked like it wanted to fall apart before it got here in our forecast last Friday. Unfortunately, we still have some moisture around today over southern Ohio, with another few hundredths to half an inch of liquid possible from I-70 southward. However, the moisture will be trying to move away off to the east and south through the day. We just are not sure it can be completely gone before mid afternoon. Northern parts of the state see some clouds holding, but those will be trying to break up too. Clouds are likely more of an issue today than tomorrow, as we should start toe see better sunshine emerge as we go forward. Tomorrow there can be some lake effect cloud cover in northern Ohio, but generally we expect a little more sun than today.Mostly sunny and dry for Wednesday and Thursday (Thanksgiving Day). Temps will move slightly higher on Wednesday but should start to move up faster on Thanksgiving. We keep dry weather around for Black Friday too, but clouds will be on the increase there. We have not major travel problems expected for Thanksgiving due to weather.Rain arrives closer to or even a little after midnight Friday night and continues through Saturday. Rain totals will run from .05”-.5” with coverage at 100% of the state. Rains of .25”-.5” will mostly be from I-70 southward, while northern Ohio will be more from a few hundredths to .25” All action is done by midnight Saturday night. We will be dry for a large part of Sunday.Rain is back by Monday afternoon and precipitation holds on all the way through the end of next Tuesday. Rains to start Monday afternoon, Monday night and early Tuesday will bring up to .6” of liquid to 90% of the state. Then, as cold air barrels in through the balance of Tuesday, rain changes to snow, especially in northern Ohio, where we can see a coating to an inch or two out of another .25” of moisture at least. All told, for the entire event, we expect liquid equivalent precipitation to range from .2”-1” with coverage at 100% of the state. This system will also bring a significant colder push, taking temps back to below normal levels statewide. Light snow can continue off and on through next Wednesday morning from US 30 northward. The map at right shows potential combined precipitation (liquid equivalent) for the next 10 days, with the largest part of this coming Friday night in to Saturday and then the first half or next week. The extended forecast period is tough to get a handle on this morning. The cold air pattern that emerges after the system early next week would be supportive of more “clipper-like” systems. The track of these favors the upper Midwest and Great Lakes, rather than the full ECB including all of Ohio. However, models are not in much agreement either. For now, we are going to allow for moisture off and on in NW Ohio next Wednesday the 28th, as mentioned above, but are taking moisture out for the 29th. A chance of snow moves over the northern half of Ohio for Saturday December 1st but is not well organized. Right now, the pattern looks to dry to us, so we expect some strengthening of that system to start December, and it may turn into a bigger even for the 2nd and 3rd. For now, though we are just going to watch it. Temps through the 11-16 day period will be below normal.
The danger in half measures is much bigger than simply losing a deal; you also lose time, the one finite, non-renewable resource you have. There’s this great quote from Lance Armstrong’s cycling coach. If you are going to expend that first big block of effort and energy to participate, you might as well go ahead and give whatever it takes to win. – Johan BruyneelYou’ll have to forgive the fact that Lance Armstrong admitted to cheating. Surely everyone was in on the plan, including his coach, but that doesn’t mean that the lesson in this quote is any less valuable to you or me.If you’re going to go through all of the trouble to engage with the prospective client in the process of changing and potentially buying from you, then there is no reason to take half measures. There is no need to shorten the time that you spend with your prospective client as you engage in this process. There is no reason to try to move through the process at a faster pace than the pace that best serves your prospective client in making a decision, and a decision to choose you.The idea of engaging in the sales process with your dream client is about helping them make a buying decision and a preference for you, your company, and your solution. What Are Half MeasuresHalf-measures include rushing through the discovery process to give your prospective client a proposal. Even if they want the proposal, if it’s premature, then you are taking a half measure by giving it to them. Do the work. It’s a half-measure to provide a proposal and presentation without having already vetted it with a prospective client to determine whether it’s a perfect fit and meets all of their needs.Half-measures include having a meeting to uncover your potential customer’s needs and leaving that meeting without an agreed-upon next step that you will take together.Half-measures also include having only product knowledge and lacking the business acumen and experience to create real value as a consultative salesperson and trusted advisor. Walking in as a talking brochure only sharing features and benefits is a half measure.Half-measures entail dealing with the single stakeholder when the decision for them is strategic, and you are going to need the support of multiple stakeholders. It’s Your ChoiceIf you’re going to exert the energy to compete, exert enough energy to win.The decision you make about half-measures is a decision about the quality and caliber of your work. If you decide to take half-measures and your prospective client doesn’t know that your “all in,” then they are not going to feel a strong preference for you and your solution. You might believe that going “all in,” requires more effort and energy, but it is still more efficient and more effective than taking half-measures and not producing the outcome at all. There is no way to go back in time and do all the things that would allow you to win—and that you should have done when you had the chance.Look at the prospects in your pipeline. Which ones are you taking half-measures to win? What would it look like to go “all in?” Essential Reading! COLUMBUS, OH – SEPTEMBER 19: Wide receiver Braxton Miller #1 of the Ohio State Buckeyes looks to run the ball in the first quarter against the Northern Illinois Huskies at Ohio Stadium on September 19, 2015 in Columbus, Ohio. (Photo by Andrew Weber/Getty Images)Braxton Miller is usually quiet and reserved – and prefers to let his play on the field do the talking. Wednesday, however, he apparently couldn’t pass up an opportunity to get in on the trolling of Michigan head coach Jim Harbaugh after the Wolverines head coach blasted Ohio State’s AD on Twitter.Miller took to Twitter Wednesday to re-post a ridiculous meme that was put together last offseason after Harbaugh took his shirt off during a satellite camp. Check it out:‘ what a time.. Who made this? pic.twitter.com/3buDE1nnN2— BRAXTON MILLER (@BraxtonMiller5) March 23, 2016Between Ezekiel Elliott, Mike Thomas and now Braxton Miller, it’s clear that Ohio State’s former players have no problem taking shots at their former rival. We’ll see if Harbaugh strikes back.
OTTAWA — The federal New Democrats ended last year by going deeper into the red.The party’s annual return posted to the Elections Canada website shows the party finished 2018 with nearly $4.5 million in negative net assets. That makes the third year in the row the party has filed an annual financial return showing a balance sheet where total assets were less than overall liabilities. It is also the worst balance sheet since 2001, which is the earliest year for which the reports are available online. The return also shows the NDP spent about $1.4 million more than it had coming in last year.Meanwhile, donations and contributions were up a little, with the NDP receiving about $5.2 million in 2018, compared to $5.1 million the year before. The Canadian Press
