1 Newcastle new boy Jonjo Shelvey has revealed his former Liverpool manager and club icon Kenny Dalglish called him to give his blessing about his move to St James’ Park. The 23-year-old completed a £12m transfer from Swansea on Tuesday this week after falling out of favour at the Welsh club.Shelvey first really established himself as a Premier League player under Dalglish’s stewardship during his time on Merseyside before he was sold to the Swans in summer 2013, and the latest Toon recruit was full of praise for his former boss.He said: “I got a phone call from him last night when I was at the MetroCentre – I didn’t realise how big that was either! He said, ‘You have got bundles of ability, get yourself right and you will be fine and the fans will love you up there’.“He has been here and he has done that. What a thing for one of the best players in the world of all time to ring you and say that. It was a big thing for me – it was more of a big thing for my dad.“It’s nice that I am getting people ring me like that, but it is down to me now to kick on.”The 23-year-old England international’s attitude was questioned as his spell at the Liberty Stadium turned sour, with interim boss Alan Curtis seemingly having decided he was surplus to requirements in the wake of his predecessor Garry Monk’s departure. However, Shelvey, who started only two games in his final two months in south Wales and was involved in a heated exchange with a fan after the second of them, Sunday’s FA Cup third-round defeat at Oxford, has vowed to make the Swans regret their decision. He said: “I want game time. I was told I didn’t suit the style of Swansea’s play by the manager. I never once asked to leave, I never came out in an interview to say that.“It’s just that I wasn’t going to play, wasn’t getting my chance and I needed a new challenge. I was lucky a massive club showed interest in me and I’m a very fortunate boy to be here, and I realise that.“The Swansea fans got on my back a bit at the end, without knowing what was going on behind the scenes. I was training hard and competing for a place in the team.“I’d played the majority of games in the season and picked up five bookings – I was suspended and didn’t come back. I never got a chance of getting back in the team, so I felt I was a bit hard done by. The fans got on my back and said I had a badattitude without really knowing what was going on behind the scenes.“Obviously it is going to be Swansea’s loss in the end. I’m just lucky enough to find a club in Newcastle that have shown interest in me.” Jonjo Shelvey
Former Inter Milan, Newcastle and Birmingham striker Obafemi Martins has become the latest high-profile player to seal a move to the Chinese Super League. The 31-year-old Nigerian has announced he is leaving Major League Soccer outfit Seattle Sounders to join Shanghai Shenhua.Martins, a League Cup winner with Birmingham in 2011, joins the likes of Demba Ba and Fredy Guarin at the Chinese club.He also joins a host of high-profile names in moving to join the big-money football revolution in the Far East, with the likes of Colombia winger Jackson Martinez, Brazilian midfielders Ramires and Alex Teixeira, and Croatian striker Nikica Jelavic – formerly of West Ham – all moving to China in recent weeks.Gervinho, Paulinho, Mohamed Sissoko, Gael Kakuta and Asamoah Gyan are other notable stars who currently play in the 16-team Chinese Super League, where the new season begins on March 4. Martins thanked the Sounders via his official Twitter account before saying: “For me it’s now time for a new challenge.“After significant reflection, I have decided to join Shanghai Shenhua of the Chinese Super League.“When I left Nigeria for Italy at the age of 15 with the hopes of a pro career, I put everything on the line. I was immersed in an unknown culture.“It may be difficult to understand or relate to, but I’ve grown to appreciate the feeling I get when entering environments where I’m not a proven footballer.“Seattle will always have a special place in my heart.” Former Newcastle striker Obafemi Martins 1
What’s your favorite item in your store? I recently bought more of these serving trays. I love selling my trays with matching napkins. They’re made in Italy. It’s just a great hostess gift and they’re pretty. What are your hours? I’m here probably 9-12 hours a day, and I stay even longer during the holidays. The other day, I was here until 2 in the morning? Doing what? Putting out merchandise and gift-wrapping. What’s the best part of your job? The buying. I am a shopper. I am a shopaholic. The best part is going to the gift shows and buying. How do you decide what to buy for your store? I basically pick what I like because my customers come in and say they like my tastes. I also write down what my customers want and I buy that. I also buy what’s trendy. What’s the worst part of your job? The long hours of confinement. You’re just stuck here during the day. I like to get out and I can’t. What challenges do you face on the job? We had some shoplifting problems for a while. Also finding the right merchandise. That’s a big challenge to find what people will like. Our customers are pretty nice. I don’t ever find that challenging, even when some of them are grumpy. I’m good at defusing grumpiness. When is the busiest time of the year? Christmas. We probably do about 35 percent of our sales in November and December. We’re usually closed on Mondays because the weekend is when we see a lot of the brides. But in December, we’re open seven days a week. Have you ever had to break up a fight at your store? Actually, they didn’t quite come to physical blows. But they were in each other’s face, and I had to step in. It was during our after-Christmas sale when the ladies are putting their stuff in piles. And one of the women took from another woman’s pile. Do you have a pet peeve? People who are too slow. People who can’t make a decision. But maybe that’s why they’re here, because they need help making a decision. Also, I love Christmas so much, but I’m so busy I don’t get enough time to enjoy it. What do you like to get for Christmas? Personal care items for spa treatments. I love the spa. I’m like a spa queen. Or trips somewhere. Outings, whether it’s a trip to the movies or a vacation. Why do you ask? Are you planning to buy me a Christmas present? No. [email protected] local news?Sign up for the Localist and stay informed Something went wrong. What does your job entail? Overseeing the daily running of the shop. I do the buying and merchandising. I do all my own accounting. I coordinate weddings. I oversee the wedding from whenever they hire me until the end. I’m actually there the day of the wedding. I do everything from helping them find a location to securing their vendors like a florist and musicians. And usually I do their invitations here. I help them with the style of their wedding. We have a florist who works out of our store. What type of gifts do you sell? Of course, we sell gifts and wedding accessories. We have candles and bath products, home decor items. Many people come in here for a quick hostess gift as if you’re going to dinner at someone’s house. At Wendy Metcalfe’s wedding nearly 22 years ago, a guest was so impressed with the event that she later asked the bride to organize her nuptials. Metcalfe agreed to do it for free. But as word got around, she started to plan weddings for pay. That became a sideline for Metcalfe, who was working in finance at TRW Inc. Nearly a decade later, the Redondo Beach resident opened a Riviera Village gift shop called Wrapsody. That’s where she sells custom invitations – especially for weddings – other stationary and trinkets, and gift-wrapping services.

1 Vincent Kompany and Raheem Sterling are poised to return for Manchester City in Tuesday’s rearranged Premier League game at Newcastle.City captain Kompany has been included in the squad to travel to St James’ Park after a month on the sidelines with the latest in a long line of calf-related problems.England forward Sterling is also back in contention after missing five games since suffering a groin injury in the derby loss to Manchester United on March 20.Kompany’s influence on the City team is significant but manager Manuel Pellegrini has not had to rush him back with the previously erratic Eliaquim Mangala and Nicolas Otamendi finally finding some consistent form.Pellegrini said: “I am very happy with the way they are playing now, both of them, and Vincent will also be an important help for our defence.“I always say if we are fighting for important things it is because we have a very good squad.“Sterling is just coming from an important muscle injury and we will see tomorrow if he can play some minutes. It depends how he returns from the injury.”The news is timely for City ahead of their Champions League semi-final with Real Madrid, the first leg of which takes place at the Etihad Stadium next week. But prosecutors said the case had nothing to do with sex. Hurst, who suffers from a mental illness, became enraged when his stepfather told him he could no longer live under his roof. “The evidence showed that conclusively the victim had not acted inappropriately toward the defendant in any way,” said Deputy District Attorney Jeff Stodel, who prosecuted the case. “The victim was nothing but kind toward the defendant.” Hurst’s attorney, Henry Salcido, said he planned to appeal. “If a case should ever be taken up on appeal, this is the case,” Salcido said. “It’s probably best that I just merely indicate that.” Sentencing is scheduled for Feb. 1. Gauci’s brother, Tom Gauci, said he might speak or make his feelings known in a letter during the “victim impact” portion of the hearing. “We’re just thankful and relieved it’s over with and the jury came to the right decision,” said Tom Gauci, who thanked the police and prosecution for their work, and the community for its support. Gauci’s family and friends said the defense’s claims that Gauci had sexually assaulted Hurst were nothing more than “character assassination.” “They tried to make Bobby out to be some vicious and violent person and a bisexual who didn’t love his wife,” said Jose Avila, Gauci’s lifelong friend. “But nothing could be further from the truth. “He tried to help those kids and his wife. The picture they painted of him was upsetting, but it goes to show what extremes people will go to protect their sons and their family.” Stodel said the prosecution always believed it had a strong case against Hurst. “I really feel that the victim has received justice and the victim’s family has received justice,” Stodel said. Jurors said they did not believe Hurst’s self-defense claim that he killed his stepfather to stop a sexual advance. They also said testimony by Hurst and his mother that Gauci had previously sexually assaulted him was never proved. “I didn’t believe anything the defendant said and the mother, I think, lied on the stand a lot,” said a male juror who works in customer service. “It was obvious she was trying to get her son off.” Hurst killed Gauci during a fight that spilled out of Gauci’s home into the 2200 block of 232nd Street in Torrance. The crime was particularly brutal. Police officers found pools of blood in the street. Hurst’s clothes were covered with it. He pulled down Gauci’s pants to make it look like sex had occurred. A Torrance man was found guilty Friday of beating his stepfather – a popular Harbor College baseball coach – to death with a dumbbell, kicking him with steel-toed boots and stabbing him six times in the neck. Ashton Hurst, 36, showed no emotion as a Torrance Superior Court clerk read the jury’s verdict convicting him of one count of first-degree murder in the Feb. 8, 2005, killing of Robert Gauci, 44. Hurst faces 25 years to life in prison. “There were no winners in this,” said one juror, a 48-year-old Torrance construction worker. “It was two families torn apart.”

The two briefly scuffled and television replays showed Dooling throwing a punch at Allen that did not connect. The two were eventually separated with Orlando’s Stacey Augmon pulling Allen away from Dooling. Underneath the stands, Dooling briefly ran toward the Sonics locker room and was seen yelling at Allen, but team officials and police kept the two apart. Dooling was scoreless in three minutes of play, while Allen had just one point in eight minutes. Arroyo out for one: Detroit Pistons guard Carlos Arroyo was suspended by the NBA for one game without pay Wednesday for bumping an official while protesting a foul call. Arroyo was ejected after he made contact with the official with 7:43 left in Detroit’s 96-86 win over the New Orleans Hornets on Tuesday night. He had picked up his sixth personal foul moments earlier while trying to block a shot by Hornets guard Speedy Claxton. Seattle SuperSonics guard Ray Allen and Orlando’s Keyon Dooling were ejected for fighting during the second quarter of Wednesday night’s game in Seattle. Allen and Dooling got into a scuffle with 10:53 left in the second quarter and Seattle holding a 33-24 lead. Arroyo, a reserve averaging 13.3 minutes a game, will sit out of the Pistons’ game at the San Antonio Spurs tonight. One last meeting: The San Antonio Spurs and Detroit Pistons have the top records in the league and one more game against each other tonight in San Antonio before going their separate ways for the rest of the season. If they do meet again, it will be for another NBA title. The two teams met on Christmas Day in a rematch of last season’s NBA finals and Detroit held San Antonio to just eight points in the first quarter and clamped down on the Spurs’ offense in the fourth in a 85-70 win. That point total was the lowest of the season for the Spurs, and the Pistons expect the rematch to also be dominated by defense. “People want to see scoring in basketball, but we’re two defensive teams,” said Detroit forward Tayshaun Prince. “A lot of people like the matchup, but at the same time, they’d like to see us score more, but that’s not going to happen.” San Antonio ended New Jersey’s 10-game winning streak on Tuesday night, beating the Nets 96-91. The Spurs nearly faded down the stretch, seeing a 16-point lead cut to four in the final minute. “We can’t have bad endings of games because against Detroit or good teams, it can hurt us,” said San Antonio guard Tony Parker. The Pistons beat New Orleans on Tuesday to improve their record to 27-5. San Antonio stands at 27-8, the league’s second-best mark. 160Want local news?Sign up for the Localist and stay informed Something went wrong. Please try again.subscribeCongratulations! TAMPA, Fla. (AP) – Effa Manley became the first woman elected to the baseball Hall of Fame when the former Newark Eagles co-owner was among 17 people from the Negro Leagues and pre-Negro Leagues chosen Monday by a special committee. “This is a historic day at the Hall of Fame,” shrine president Dale Petroskey said. “I hoped that someday there would be a woman in the Hall. It’s a pretty proud moment.” This year’s Hall class – 18, including former reliever Bruce Sutter – is by far the biggest in history, breaking the record of 11 in 1946. There are now 278 Hall members. Mule Suttles and Biz Mackey were among the 12 players selected, along with five executives. Buck O’Neil and Minnie Minoso, the only living members among the 39 candidates on the ballot, were not elected by the 12-person panel. Manley co-owned the New Jersey-based Eagles with her husband, Abe, and ran the business end of the team for more than a decade. The Eagles won the Negro Leagues World Series in 1946 – one year before Jackie Robinson broke the major league color barrier.
